About Us

Thank you for visiting the About Us area of our web site.  In this area you can learn more about the TTA’s mission, our history, who are members are, our governance structure and the various committee’s we run

A. Mission Statement

Our mission is to be a recognized leader in providing trucking companies of all types and sizes located or operating within the Greater Toronto Area with relevant and useful industry-related information, opportunities to share knowledge, insight and fellowship with colleagues, legislative issue monitoring and the ability to meet and establish mutually beneficial relationships with a wide range of industry suppliers.

B. History

The Toronto Trucking Association has roots that extend far back into the history of Toronto’s trucking industry.  The organization’s roots can be traced back to the early 1950’s and the Toronto Cartage Association (TCA) – a group that included a wide range of trucking and transport haulers.

Concerned that the TCA was not as focused on the needs of the industry and its customers as was necessary, a small number of individuals decided to bring together a group of cartage company owners whose purpose would be to represent their company’s and the industry for the benefit and betterment of both.  Thus, the Industrial Cartage Association (ICA) was formed in February, 1963.  Over the years the ICA focused on several issues such as truck licensing, controls on market entry and industry price stability.

In 1975, ICA members decided the name “Toronto Trucking Association” was more reflective of the wide range of companies who had by that time become members, and the TTA was officially established as a non-profit organization.

Since this time we’ve continued to expand our scope of operations well beyond legislative monitoring and representation alone to include educational seminars, providing information, networking opportunities and supplier relations.

C. Member Profile

The TTA is comprised of approximately 100 member companies that provide, or support the provision of for-hire trucking services in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Association has two types of members:

  • Active: Refers to companies that provide for hire trucking and related services
  • Trade: Refers to companies that supply goods and services to the trucking sector

Our active members include companies of all sizes, who provide a wide range of services.  We have some members with as few as 3 vehicles in their delivery fleet, and others with over 400.  Similarly, the services our active members provide include both full truckload and less than truckload.  The points they service are as close as the city of Toronto, and as far away as the United States and Mexico.

Collectively, our active members operate a fleet of over 2,000 vehicles, and employ or use the services of almost 3,000 people.  Given the broad scope of their operations, it is clear that TTA members are a vital component of the Greater Toronto Area economy.

While many of our members are located in the Greater Toronto Area, this is not a requirement.  Over the years several members located outside of Toronto have realized many benefits and excellent value from their TTA membership.

D. Corporate Governance

As a non-profit organization, the TTA is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of individuals from both active and trade member organizations.

This is illustrated through the strong and vibrant committee’s we run.  The following list summarizes the four currently active committee’s that operate within the TTA, and the mandate of each.
